SON OF RAMBOW

Posted on the 18th April 2008

===================

So being as yesterday was Orange Wednesday myself and the other half visited the local Vue in Norwich to catch ‘Son of Rambow‘. At first I was not even slightly interested in seeing this film, that was until my Mother told me that it was really good and well worth a watch… I think it was the title that mainly put me off, plus I hadn’t even noticed anything about the film in Empire magazine (of which I am a subscriber). Well, on my Mums recommendation I decided to take a look, especially as there was so little else on.

The Son of Rambow is a film set in the 80′s that follows the lives of Will (unsure of his surname) and Lee Carter as they set out to make a short film for entry into Screen Test (a competition for young film makers). Will’s family are a strict cult and don’t allow him to watch television and as a result he needs to be exluded from class when any TV is shown to the pupils. And thus he is thrust into the path of ‘the devil child’ Lee Carter who is thrown out of class for misbehaving. Their friendship isn’t any ordinary one though as Lee Carter bribes Will into being his stuntman in his film project which in reality Will finds exhilerating as a change of pace from the Cult that his family belongs to.

What ensues is a very funny (literally laugh out loud for me!) and sometimes touching film that looks into a few of the different experiences we can have as we are growing up and how the world around us can shape who we become. Really worth a watch, even my younger sister (11) liked the film so it’s great for kids too unless you don’t like them to hear words like ‘Bastard’ and see clips of Rambo in action (oh and generally being miscreants)!

This film doesn’t seem to have a Metacritic score at the time of posting, however Empire Magazine awarded it 4 out of 5 stars, check out a small review HERE

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES

Posted on the 2nd April 2008

==================

Today myself and the other half visited our local Cinema to see ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles‘. After looking at the current offering in the Cinema (stuff like 27 Dresses, 10,000 BC and Drillbit Taylor) we decided to watch the Spiderwick Chronicles, well, it was the ladies turn to choose and it looked decidedly better than anything else we might go to see!!

Well the movie itself was okay, more of a child’s film than anything, not really on the same ‘appealing to kids and adults’ wavelength like the Harry Potter series. My younger sister at the age of 11 would have loved it… kinda gives you an idea of what to expect. It’s a nice tale of a family getting to grips with moving away from their regular everyday life in New York into a creepy looking old house after the Mother and Father parted ways. There are many fantastical creatures and a few scary beasts thrown into the mix, but all round it’s a look at how the family comes together to fight not only their own demons but also the ones outside their home.

Take the little ones, but be warned there are some nasty beasties so i wouldn’t recommend under 8′s going to this one.
